How to Know If This Type of Massage Is Not Right for You

Content:

Booking a massage today is easy. Choosing a treatment that truly meets your needs is much more difficult. In our practice, we regularly meet clients who say right away that they do not know what type of massage they need. And that is absolutely normal. Many people choose a treatment based on a friend’s recommendation, online reviews, or simply the name of the massage. But a massage that works wonderfully for one person may completely fail to meet another person’s expectations. That is why we always start not with the treatment itself, but with a conversation.

There Is No Universal “Best” Massage

One of the most common mistakes is trying to find the most effective type of massage. In reality, there is no universal treatment that works equally well for everyone.

At our salon, we work with our own proprietary techniques that are not limited to a standard set of massage methods. During a session, we can adjust the intensity, combine different techniques, and focus specifically on the approach that a particular person needs.

For example, restorative therapy can be more intensive if a client needs deeper work on the tissues. Or it can be gentler, more relaxing, or more lymphatic-drainage-oriented, depending on the client’s needs and physical condition.

That is why a good massage is not necessarily the strongest, longest, or most intensive one. It is a treatment that matches what your body and your needs require at that particular moment.

What Signs May Indicate That a Treatment Is Not Right for You?

Not every uncomfortable sensation means that a massage was unsuccessful. However, there are several situations that may make us reconsider whether the chosen treatment is appropriate.

You Expected a Completely Different Effect

This is the most common situation. After a session, a client may say, “I thought I would feel lighter,” “I wanted to relax more,” “I expected the pain to go away immediately,” or “I don’t feel anything special.”

Usually, this does not mean that the massage was performed poorly. It simply means that the client’s expectations did not match what that particular treatment was designed to provide.

You Feel Constantly Uncomfortable During the Massage

Sometimes people tolerate pain simply because they believe that “a good massage should hurt.” This is one of the most dangerous myths.

Yes, some techniques can be quite intense. But if the pain is sharp, you remain tense throughout the session, hold your breath, or simply want the treatment to end as soon as possible, you should say so immediately.

We will always adjust the pressure or recommend a different type of massage if necessary. Enduring discomfort “for the sake of results” is far from always the right approach.

You Do Not See a Reason to Continue the Course

Sometimes, after the first session, a person feels disappointed and realizes that the treatment was not what they expected. In such cases, we do not insist on continuing with the same procedure.

It is much more appropriate to reconsider the approach at that point than to complete an entire course without achieving the expected result.

How Do We Know When It Is Time to Change the Treatment?

Our clients are often surprised by how many questions we ask before a massage. We are interested not only in where you feel tension or discomfort.

We ask what is bothering you right now, what you expect to feel after the treatment, what previous massage experience you have had, whether you experienced any unpleasant sensations after previous sessions, as well as what your lifestyle and level of physical activity are like.

The answers to these questions help us understand which treatment would be most appropriate. Sometimes, after just a few minutes of consultation, we recommend a different type of massage from the one the person originally booked.

This is not an attempt to sell you a different service. On the contrary, sometimes the recommended treatment is even simpler or shorter. Our main goal is for the client to achieve the result they came to the salon for.

When Do We Recommend a Different Type of Massage Ourselves?

In my practice, I regularly encounter situations where a person comes in with a particular idea of what kind of massage they need, but after a conversation it becomes clear that their actual needs are somewhat different.

For example, a client wants the most intensive treatment possible because they believe it will be more effective. At the same time, they have just come through a particularly demanding period at work, feel extremely tired, and actually need recovery and relaxation above all else.

Or a person wants to feel lighter in their legs but also has significant muscle tension that requires a different approach.

In such cases, we can adjust the intensity, add specific techniques, or focus on a different aspect within our proprietary methodology. We explain to the client why we are recommending this particular approach. The final decision, of course, always remains theirs.

If You Don’t Know Which Massage to Choose — That’s Normal

The worst thing you can do before booking a massage is try to determine on your own which technique you need.

If you are unsure or do not know what to choose, simply describe your needs to the administrator or therapist. Tell them what is bothering you and what you want most — relaxation, a feeling of lightness, recovery, relief from tension, or simply a pleasant break.

In many cases, this is already enough to help guide you toward the right treatment. The final approach can be determined immediately before the session begins, after a brief consultation.

And most importantly: a good massage is not necessarily the most popular, the strongest, or the most expensive one. It is the one that fully matches your needs, your physical condition, and your expectations at that particular moment.

That is why, in our work, we reject the principle that “one technique fits everyone.” Our specialists select and adapt each treatment individually to the person. Because that is how you can achieve the best possible result.
