Why do you feel sleepy after a massage? Is this normal?
“After the massage, I was literally knocked out.” “I thought I would feel a burst of energy, but all I wanted to do was sleep.” These are some of the most common comments our guests leave after their treatments. And in most cases, this reaction is completely natural.
At Deluxe by Bezvuliak, we always explain to our clients that the effectiveness of a massage should not be judged solely by how energetic you feel afterward. Everyone’s body responds differently. Sleepiness is often not a sign of a problem, but rather an indication that your body has finally had a chance to relax.
Why Do You Feel Sleepy After a Massage?
Throughout the day, most people live in a state of constant tension: demanding work, a heavy sense of responsibility, endless deadlines, driving, exercise, long hours at a computer, and emotional stress — all of this keeps the body in a state of heightened alertness.
During a high-quality massage, the body gradually shifts into a state of deep relaxation. Muscle tension decreases, breathing becomes slower, and a sense of inner calm sets in. For many people, this is exactly the moment when the body sends a signal: now it is time to rest.
That is why you may feel like taking a nap after a treatment. It is a natural response from a body that has been functioning under increased strain — and, in some cases, stress — and has finally been given an opportunity to recover. This is why we see post-massage sleepiness as a sign of deep relaxation rather than an undesirable side effect of the treatment.
Who Is Most Likely to Experience This Reaction?
Not all clients respond to massage in the same way. Some leave feeling light and energized, while others simply want to go home, have a cup of warm tea, and relax.
Sleepiness is particularly common among people who:
- live with constant stress;
- have a demanding work schedule;
- experience prolonged muscle tension;
- do not get enough rest or sleep;
- have not allowed themselves to fully relax for a long time.
In such cases, a massage can almost feel like giving the body “permission” to take the break it has been missing for a long time.
Should You Fight the Sleepiness?
We do not recommend it. If you have an opportunity to rest after your treatment, it is better to take it. There is no need to immediately plan an intense workout, important negotiations, or tasks that require maximum concentration. Of course, not everyone can take a nap during the day.
But even a relaxing walk, a warm shower, or going to bed earlier that evening can help your body make the most of the effects of the massage. At the same time, there is no need to try to “fight” the sleepiness with large amounts of coffee or energy drinks simply because you expected a different reaction.
Why Do You Sometimes Feel More Energized After a Massage Instead?
That is also a perfectly normal response. It depends on a person’s initial condition, the type of massage, the intensity of the techniques, and what they came in seeking.
For example, after a relaxing massage, it is natural to feel calm, light, and ready to rest. After other types of massage, a person may experience increased alertness, improved mobility, and a boost of energy.
That is why we do not compare one person’s reaction with another’s. A more useful approach is to pay attention to how you personally feel and whether the result matches what you were hoping to achieve.
What Should You Tell Your Massage Therapist Before the Treatment?
To make your massage as comfortable as possible, we always recommend briefly telling your specialist about your current condition. Be sure to mention if:
- you slept poorly the night before;
- you are feeling particularly tired;
- you are experiencing emotional exhaustion;
- you are going through a very demanding period at work;
- you want deep relaxation or, conversely, a more invigorating effect.
This information helps the therapist choose the appropriate techniques, pace, and intensity of the treatment. All of our massages are individually designed, and we take a highly adaptive approach to selecting techniques based on each person’s needs.
Our Recommendations After a Massage
At Deluxe by Bezvuliak, we recommend not rushing straight back into your usual routine after a treatment. Instead, we encourage all our clients to:
- drink enough water;
- avoid physically overloading yourself immediately after the session;
- whenever possible, listen to your body’s needs and allow yourself some time to rest;
- if you feel sleepy, do not assume that something is wrong.
Paying attention to how you feel is one of the best ways to get the most out of your massage.
In most cases, feeling like you want to sleep after a massage is not a reason to worry, but a natural response of the body to deep relaxation. If, however, you experience unusual sensations after a treatment or have concerns about how you feel, be sure to let your therapist know. Open communication helps us adapt each treatment to the needs of the individual and make every subsequent visit even more comfortable and effective.
